WHAT IS A RECREATIONAL TIRE?
At Skander Tire, we carry so many different types of tires it is sometimes impossible to categorize. We carry tires for wheelchairs, go karts, minibikes, snowthrowers, ATVs, lawn mowers, mud vehicles, etc. Too numerous to list! This page decribes some of the more common type of recreational tires that we carry. Don't see what you need? CALL US! We carry it!!

ATV (All Terrain Tires)
All-terrain-tires are the most commonly used tire in the ATV market. They are exactly what they sound like --a multipurpose tire that can do everything in moderation. The term all-terrain vehicle covers a broad range of four-wheelers from golf carts to racing quads and can cover vehicles with four and three wheels, handlebars and steering wheels. ATVs are a jack-of-all-trades tire that gives you the best treadware over hard surfaces, giving you a smooth ride and a long life span in the process. You will get longer use from them as opposed to using a mud tire, which will wear very fast when used away from the bog.

Golf Cart Tires
Golf cart tires are designed to be used on grassy surfaces instead of roads. This means that they need not be designed to withstand the high speeds, high temperatures and abuse which an auto tire receives. The equipment for mounting and un-mounting these tires is not the same as for a car or pickup truck. Certain tread designs of cart tires are uni-directional, meaning that they are intended to rotate in only one direction to produce the best results. While it might not be dangerous to run them in the opposite direction, you would probably lose the benefit of increased traction which they are intended to provide.

Mud Tires
The showroom-provided rubber on most quads gives average traction and handling. If you’re going to encounter demanding muddy trails, you will need ATV-mud-tires to get you through them. Mud tires are typically balloon-like in appearance compared to some of the flatter hard trail and race tires. Mud tires have deep lugs, angling from the centre of the tire to the sides. Generally, mud tires are good in all terrain except on hard trails. If you need to do a combination of surfaces look for a good tire that does both jobs --perhaps a mid-range mud tire.

Trailer Tire/Boat Trailer Tire
(Please see our FAQ for more information)
If you're towing a trailer you need to be aware that your trailer tire needs to be rated to carry the load you expect within the trailer or RV you're hauling. Trailer tires are different from light truck tires or passenger tires and you need to look for the pre-fix of ST (which means Specialty Trailer), instead of an LT or P, in the tire size. We recommend that you take into consideration:

- the gross vehicle weight, and
- the weight each individual tire will carry.

Lawn Mower Tires
Mowing a lawn can be a very serious business. So too, can be choosing the right tires. You may need lawn mower tires or you may be in the market for riding lawn mower tires. If you are using a walk behind mower, the last thing you want is a tire that rips up all your hard work. You want that mower to go in the direction you point it and not try to direct you.

Lawn Tractor Tires
Lawn tractor tires are different to conventional tractor tires in that they are intended for lawn-related work. Lawn tractors can be fitted with lots of optional attachments, so when you choose your tires you may want to consider if you will be towing or pulling additional weight behind you.

Your lawn tractor will have different diameters on the front and rear tires. The front tires being much smaller than the rear. Ribs on front tires are usually straight and the rear tires are cross-ribbed. Tires are made so they cut through the earth. Lawn tractor tires must have excellent traction as well as resistance to lateral sway. All these features are needed for smooth driving. It is important that the ground below the rear lawn tractor tires is not pushed down or compacted. Lawn tractor tires are made so they cut through the earth instead of compacting it.
